Louise Bourgeois was born in France and soon came to America to become one of the best-known living women artists today.
She conceived of and wrote the puritan in 1947. But, due to the work she put into another similar book written at the same time entitled He Disappeared into Complete Silence, Bourgeois did not begin making the puritan until 1989; Sweet Briar's edition was completed in 1996. Thus, this work spanned over the majority of the artist's life. This is a hand-colored artbook; artbooks are a combination of text and original art. In this case, a poetic narrative is combined with simplified modernist architectural images.
"Do you know the New York sky? You should, it is supposed to be known. It is outstanding. It is a serious thing." This is the beginning of Bourgeois' artbook. The simple yet enigmatic text along with the abstract, geometric imagery draws the reader/viewer through the pages.
The 8 engravings illustrate the streets and buildings and attitudes of New York city. The story tells of a man who lives in a New York building. Bourgeois develops her relationship with this man and the narrative becomes a love story which ends in the death of the man.
The artwork is refined, representing the artistic development of a lifetime, as Bourgeois uses simple forms and colors to illustrate a word or meaning in her text. This is an exploration in images and words, both individually and together.
