Chen Haiyan
(b.1955) Fusheng, Liaoning |
In 1984 Chen graduated from the print department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (afterwards called the National Academy of Arts) and then joined the faculty. She creates both traditional Chinese ink paintings and woodblock prints, the latter often having the spontaneous quality associated with brush painting. Dreams are her typical subject matter. Juxtaposition of images and words recalls the format of Buddhist sutra handscrolls, which combine text and pictures.
