Huang Peimo

Huang began to learn woodblock printing in 1943. In addition to art creation, he has worked, principally in Nanjing, as a teacher and also as an editor of the newspapers Subei ribao and Nanjing ribao. His official positions have included vice-chairman of the Nanjing Literary Union, chairman of the Nanjing branch of the Chinese Artists' Association, standing member of the council of the Chinese Printmakers' Association, and vice-director of the Jiangsu branch of the Chinese Printmakers' Association.

Together with others, he wrote The Technique of Woodblock. He was one of the principal developers of modern innovations for traditional Chinese shuiyin woodblock printing.

23. In Praise of the Red Flag

The group work Lauding the Long Rainbow was created to commemorate both the completion of the Great Yangzi Bridge, in Nanjing, and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, in 1974. In Praise of the Red Flag was one of seven prints in the series, each done by five different artists, showing stages in the bridge's construction and how it looked when completed.

The title, written with larger-character posters receding into the distance, is a Chinese saying that means "well established."

"Jiangnan" means literally "south of the Yangtze River." The area's moderate climate and rich area have long stood for prosperity and well-being.
