Original name, He Turu.

Li studied art in 1947 at the National Beiping Art College. In 1949, while continuing his study of art at Huabei College, Li joined the local workers'cultural group and later worked for both the Tianjin Art Workers' Group and the Beijing Art Supply Society. He graduated in 1951 from the special classes for cadres at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Assigned to work in Sichuan under the direction of Li Shaoyan (see above), he became the art designer for the newspaper New China Daily and lead artist for the journal Masses' Pictorial. Li has authored many articles on the technique and themes of woodblock printing. He has been leader of the secretariat of the council of the Chongqing branch of the Chinese Artists' Association, vice-chairman of the council of the Sichuan branch of the Chinese Artists' Association, and member of the standing council of the Chinese Printmakers' Association. He was among the first artists to portray Tibetan customs.

The upper part of the outer dress dropped to their waists and the shape of their teapot nestling in the chaff identify the young women as Tibetan.
