Lin Jun

Original name, Pei Bingzhe

Lin joined the revolutionary cause at sixteen and, in 1940. travelled to Yan'an, where he studied at the Shanbei Public School and at the Lu Xun Academy of Literature and Arts. After graduation, Lin joined the Eighth Route Army and was leader of both an art and a drama group in the Jin-Sui Border Region, in Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. Assigned to edit the newspaper Fighting Pictorial, Lin also created prints documenting the soldiers' lives. He travelled with the army to the South in 1949 and continued editorial work in Chongqing for the Xinan Military Region Authority. After the founding of The People's Republic, he was demobilized and worked in the art section of Xinan Daily Newspaper. He became a member of the Xinan branch of the Chinese Artists' Association and, later, its vice-chairman.

87. Rely on Our Hands for the Hard Struggle

The facades of the houses built into the loess soil of North China identify the location as *Yan'an, the Communist base in Shaanxi from 1937. Some soldiers sew cloth shoes, while others work on building projects. Cut off from supplies by both the Japanese and Guomindang armies, the *People's Liberation Army emphasized self-sufficiency.
