Premier Zhou Enlai, who died in January 1976,was a veteran associate of Mao Zedong and a national hero who symbolized moderation for both intellectuals and ordinary people during the turbulent decade of the Cultural Revolution. Zhou was not given a state funeral, but ordinary Chinese honored him in Tiananmen Square with a mountain of wreaths placed at the base of the Monument to the People's Heroes, seen dimly in the print behind the mourners.
