The red sun rising, symbol of the Communist
Party and, in particular, of Mao Zedong, climbs
above the festively decorated club. "The east is
red, the sun is rising" was a revolutionary motto
and also the opening lines of a popular song
written by He Luding. For a Chinese viewer these
associations would immediately come to mind. (see

11. The People's Commune Is Good

The print's title is written on the bridge. A
tractor, preceded by the traditional New Year's
dancing dragon and lion, pulls a wagon full of
celebrants and musicians surrounded by banners
which read, "celebrate abundant harvest" and
"double happiness." Lotus flowers, traditonal
symbols of plenty, decorate the foreground.
