Pablo Picasso is practically a household name which is associated with great works of modern art such as Les Demoiselles d'Avignon of 1907 and Guernica of 1937. He worked in numerous styles and continuously evolved. Two Women Before a Sculptured Head is an example of one of his lithographs which belongs to a series of 40 prints, all dating from the year 1933, which follow the theme of a sculptor's studio. Picasso, at this time, was largely interested and involved in sculpture. One woman, Marie-Thérèse, who Picasso was involved with at the time, modeled for both the women in this engraving as well as for the sculpted head. Women are a continuous theme in Picasso's work, and the state of his relationship with them is usually reflected in his art.
Here, as in the other works belonging to the series, Picasso uses delicate, flowing lines to form the scene of two women contemplating a piece of sculpture. Picasso uses geometric patterns such as small triangles and stars to fill the space and unify the work. These patterns can be seen in the frame behind the standing woman's head and shoulders. This pattern is lightened and repeated in the seated woman's dress and then darkened and altered slightly for the vines which wrap around the seated woman's head and the sculpted head. The vase of flowers which sits on the window sill behind the sculpture and the vine on the sculpture which loops down to the left help to connect the three women. Picasso has touched on Classicism with his use of vines, of the profile, and with the simple clarity of line and space.
