Pat Steir taught in California and now lives in New York. During the 1950s when Abstract Expressionism prevailed, Steir followed her own style of literal renditions of birds, animals, and figures in symbolic situations.
Steir's later paintings of the 1980s explored great works by artists throughout history as she painted a number of self-portraits where each was done in the manner of a different historical artist. She describes her travels through painting history as a sort of research about connections in the universe.
Steir's later works moved farther towards abstraction. She sees reality and abstraction as one in the same, where their only difference lies in how one views them.
Steir's large etching Abstraction, Belief, and Desire is one of a series of etchings. Having three prints on one page is a grand technique, stretching the limits of the printing press by 42 and 61 inches.
In addition, Steir used a variety of artistic techniques. She described this etching as an aid for traveling in time.
The three prints in this etching progress from concrete to abstract: the print on the left is an assemblage of varied geometrical shapes; the middle print shows these shapes in three-dimensional form, moving about; the print on the right depicts the shapes among other images in an abstract space.
This etching demonstrates Steir's opinion that reality and abstraction are the same thing. According to her, it is only a matter of focus.
