During the Spring of '97, Bobbie Jo Hedrick'98, worked on a web site entitled An Apprentice's Handbook for Illuminated Manuscripts in conjunction with the exhibition of manuscripts in the Pannell gallery and ARTH 236: Medieval Matters taught by Dr. Aileen Laing.

While everyone else enjoyed their spring breaks, Hedrick stayed on campus to complete the web site that includes a complete glossary of medieval terms. As a result of her hard work she was interviewed by Patrick Evans from the local television station, WDBJ-7, from Roanoke.

According to Bobbie Jo, "The entire web site itself is designed to be a `guide for apprentices' who wish to make their own illuminated manuscripts."

She is doing the web site for a grade in Professor Laing's Medieval matters class, which is linked with the Medieval Matters exhibition in the Anne Gary Pannell Art Gallery.

The exhibition hosts a rare collection of medieval manuscripts from The Walters Art Gallery and the private collection of Harry Walton (February 17-April 20, 1997).

Bobbie Jo has taken the often dry academic information about manuscripts and turned it into fun and entertaining reading. For example, there is a section called "Gallimaufry" which contains medieval curses, riddles, and quotes from famous people of the medieval age. Mary Lea Martin `98, who is also in Laing's Medieval Matters class, did the illustrations for the site; all of the graphics are original.
