ARTHUR TAIT

Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait
English, 1819 - 1905
East Inlet: Raquette Lake Adirondacks , 1873
Oil on panel, 13" x 22"
Gift of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas F. Torrey

Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, a member of the Hudson River School was born near Liverpool, England where, as a youngster, he attended a country school in Lancashire. His close quarters with nature led to a fascination with animals and romantic compositions. He developed a precise attention to detail which later contributed to his success.

At the age of 12 Tait left to work in Manchester. There he studied casts from the Royal Manchester Institute. During the 1830's Tait learned the art of lithography.

Early in his career, Tait produced architectural prints which emphasized his talent for detail. Soon, with the help of the American painter George Catlin, Tait turned towards nature and animal painting. Tait traveled to upstate New York where he settled in the Adirondacks. Tait then became a professional sportsman and animal painter.

Hudson River School painters celebrated the beauty and splendor of America's landscapes. The school, named retrospectively, focused mainly on the Catskill Mountain region in northern New York where the Hudson River flows. Also popular was the landscape surrounding the rest of New England.

East Inlet is only one of Tait's roughly 200 deer paintings. The buck dominates the center of the painting in a relaxed position, unaffected by the hunter's eye. This is not a hunted creature; rather, the buck is portrayed in his natural state, without human intervention. The misty lake creates a strong atmosphere which extends into the background, emphasizing the muscular animal.

Tait's love of detail can be seen in the deer, the inlet he is standing on, and in the water. Tait's use of natural colors, of browns and light blues, enhances the painting's realistic effect. These serene Adirondacks belong to the deer, not to man.
